Hello again,

I have just a couple of things to speak to you about this week.  The first was that the Mighty Empires Campaign Weekend, that took place just last weekend.   This event was a combination of competitive gaming, team based play and a map based campaign, all done in one weekend.  Participants traveled down to the Oakville Battle Bunker to fight for dominace of the old world.  The complete rules will be going online very shortly, so that anyone interested in running a similar event will be able to.  This will be the first of several variant tournament formats that will be going online over the coming months.  So keep your eyes on the community site for new twists on your Games Workshop Gaming.

The second piece of news is the second set of Grand Tournament invitations are going out.  Below is the list of the people who have qualified for the available slots in the Grand Tournament. THE END OF THE SEASON

The 07-08 season is now at a close, and what a great season it was. This year saw several changes to the Hall of Heroes, the main one being the evolution of the Premiere and Showcase events.  The Showcase and Premiere events were run by Independent Retailers, Grey Knight and Clubs from across the country and they were all very successful.   These events have proven that the Canadian community is strong and is able to run the events they want themselves, and that Games Workshop is here to help them in any way we can.   Next year will be even better as the community continues to run new and interesting events that allow everyone to get the most out of the hobby.
The focus now turns to the preparations for the culmination of the season, the Grand Tournament.  Any player who finished in the top 25 for Warhammer or Warhammer 40,000 Hall of Heroes points, qualifies for this year’s Grand Tournament.  The top 25 players in each system will be joined by the winners of the Premiere Events as they all do battle on May 24th and  25th to decide this season’s Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 Grand Champions.

Although the season is over, organizers have up until March 10th to submit any outstanding tournament results.  It is important to get all the results in as it might be the difference for a player qualifying for the Grand Tournament, or not.
With the release of the Vampire Counts army book there are several issues to address.  The first is the issue of the Sylvanian army list in the Storm of Chaos book.  The reason behind the Sylvanian list was to allow players to field an army without necromancers, an army based solely on Vampire characters.  The list compensated for the lack of wizards through additional bound spells and the ability to take a high level of magical defence.    The new Vampire Counts book was written with a similar focus, to make the army into a legion of the dead commanded by Vampires.  The new book allows you to field an all Vampire army, but without all the restrictions of the Sylvanian list.  The new book even allows you to field all the models from the Sylvanian list including multiple Black Coaches and Grave Guard with great weapons.  With the new book there really is no need for the Sylvanian list and as such it will not be  a legal army list in the 2008-2009 Hall of Heroes Season.

The second issue with the release of the Vampire Counts book, are the spells Invocation of Nehek and Vanhels Danse Macabre.  The question that has risen is can these spells be cast on a friendly unit engaged in close combat.  In the Warhammer Rulebook it states that a “wizard cannot cast spells at units engaged in close combat unless the spell only affects the caster or the spell description specifies otherwise.”  Neither of these spells specify that they can target a unit in close combat, but both of them imply that you can.  As healing units in combat is fundamental to the Vampire Counts Army the following ruling applies.

For the 2008-2009 Hall of Heroes season Invocation of Nehek, Vanhels Danse Macabre and the replenished wounds from Summon Undead Horde can target friendly units engaged in close combat.

The last item of news is the rules for the new Hall of Heroes Season.  The rules have all been finalized and will be going up shortly, keep your eyes on this page for all the details.

As always if you have any questions, concerns or comments, feel free to contact me at hall.heroes@games-workshop.ca .  Until next time, I hope to see you out there.

OUTSTANDING RESULTS AND THE GRAND TOURNAMENT

Hello again,

With the end of the season rapidly approaching, I would like to remind Organizers to submit any results that still haven’t been sent in. As of today every tournament that has been submitted has been updated and is on the list of recorded events. If, as an organizer, you see one of your tournaments not on this list please contact me so that we can get your tournament results included. Remember that players find it extremely discouraging to go to events and not get the points for their attendance, so please take a moment to submit any outstanding results.

For any players out there that are missing Hall of Heroes points I ask you to please contact me and the organizer of the event. By contacting both parties this will help to ensure you receive all the points that you have earned.

The season officially ends on February 29th, therefore any event held after this date will count towards next season. There is a 10-day grace period at the end of the season in order for us to receive all results. That means that after March 10th results will no longer be accepted for the 07-08 season.

Results can be emailed to the Hall of Heroes at hall.heroes@games-workshop.ca or they can be faxed to 905 829 9008. For all faxes please write attention Hall Of Heroes.

The Lord of the Rings Grand Tournament?

On a completely different note, there is the possibility of a The Lord of the Rings Grand Tournament. Every year the The Lord of the Rings following grows throughout the Hall of Heroes and we are wondering if this is the year that warrants a The Lord of the Rings Grand Tournament. The best way to decide would be to let you, the Hall of Heroes players, tell us what you want. Therefore, any Hall of Heroes members wishing to participate in a The Lord of the Rings Grand Tournament are asked to please contact me at hall.heroes@games-workshop.ca

THE GRAND TOURNAMENT IS ANNOUNCED!!!

Hello again,

I was hoping to take a moment of your time and address a few outstanding items.  The first and the most important is the fate of the Grand Tournament.  This year we will be moving the Grand Tournament out of Games Day and have it take place at Games Workshop Head Office.  There are several reasons for this, the most important being that having the event at Games Day has never worked out quite as well as we had hoped.  The Grand Tournament needs to be at least 5 games in order to crown a proper champion, therefore it has to be a two day event.   Unfortunately in order to get it to fit into Games Day, it either had to be one day or take place on the Friday and the Saturday.  Neither of the options are anywhere near ideal.   The other reason is to give the Grand Tournament the attention it deserves.  With the Grand Tournament being at Games Day we only ever had the time and staff available to partially cover the event, we had no time to recognize the various provincial winners or those who qualified to the GT for winning a Premiere Event .  Now with a weekend entirely devoted to the Grand Tournament, we can ensure the maximum attendance, full coverage and all in all a fantastic event.

The Grand Tournament is scheduled for May 24th and 25th at the Games Workshop Head Office.  (This is the weekend after Victoria Day for all those of you who are worried we scheduled it on a long weekend.)  The season ends on February 29th and the Grand Tournament invitations will be going out in the first couple weeks of March.  So for those of you hoping to qualify by being in the top 25 of the Hall of Heroes you only have a few short months to get those last points.

On a completely different note there are several armies that need to be addressed.  The first army is the Lothern Sea Guard list from Storm of Chaos and how this is affected  by the new High Elf book.   There really is no reason to keep the list as a Lothern Sea Guard list easily translates to the new High Elf Book.   With the 0-1 restriction removed from Sea Guard in the High Elf book, the Lothern Sea Guard army can be easily made with the new book.  The only exception is the Merwyrm, but then you can simply stick a hero or wizard on top and use it as a Sun Dragon.

The second army and the real problem is the Lost and the Damned army, from the Eye of Terror Codex.  The problem with this army is the huge discrepancies between it and the new Chaos Space Marine Codex.  The Lost and the Damned army allows you to take wargear from the Chaos Codex, although in the new Codex there is no wargear section, It also refers to Daemon Packs, Daemon Beasts and Nurglings all of which do not exist in the new Chaos Codex.   All of this points towards just eliminating the list from the Hall of Heroes.  The problem with arbitrarily removing the list is that the vast majority of the models in the Lost and the Damned army can not be used with the new Chaos Codex.  In fact most models can not be used in any Warhammer 40,000 army.   The obvious question is what should we do.  With only a couple of months left in the Hall of Heroes season, the best answer is to leave it be.  Allow players to use their Lost and the Damned army with the older Chaos Codex for the rest of the season.  Next season we can reevaluate the Lost and the Damned list and decide its fate.

If you have any questions or comments on the fate of these armies, please let me know at hall.heroes@games-workshop.ca

GAMES DAY IS COMING!!!

Hello Again,

It has been a while since I have given my two cents on the world of the Hall Of Heroes and I figured it was about time. There have been several showcase and premiere events through out the country over the last couple of months and hopefully you caught the one in your area. These events have been a great success so far with each event offering something a little different to you the Games Workshop Hobbyists. Do not worry if you missed your local event, there are several more that will be announced in the new year, so keep your eyes on the website for all the details.

With the holidays coming what better thing to do than speak of next summer and the biggest event in Canada, Games Day. For those of you concerned with the fate of Games Day, there is no need to worry. Games Day will be be happening in 2008. I can not officially release the date as of yet, as there will be a big formal announcement coming very shortly. So I will not mention the Games Day is taking place on June 21st and plans are already in motion to make this the most unique and exciting Games Day Canada, ever. There are several exciting developments for this year's Games Day, but I will have to keep quiet about those until Games Day is formally announced.

Talk to you again shortly and until next, time I hope to see you out there.

GAMES WORKSHOP'S FIRST SHOWCASE EVENT

Hello Everyone,

The North Bay Hobbies Doubles Tournament taking place on September 22nd, will be Games Workshop Canada’s first showcase event.   A showcase event is a fantastic tournament that we encourage all people to go to.  These tournaments are all a little bit different from your regular Hall Of Heroes tournaments and are all absolutely fantastic events.   There are so many great tournaments and events happening around the country, that we felt it was time to highlight some of them. Showcase events will do exactly this.  Each Showcase event will be attended by members of the GW marketing team and will be fully covered on the Games Workshop Canada Website.  These events are a chance to get you and your army noticed.  As well as covering the events, we will be bringing with us, the sneak peek models, all the models that are going to be released in the next couple of months.  We will also be hosting a Question and Answer session, so you can ask about anything that is on the horizon for Games Workshop.

The North Bay Doubles tournament was one of the most fantastic events that I had the pleasure of attending last year.  The event is run by Robert Steele, one of the Grey Knights for Northern Ontario.  Rob does a great job of keeping things very organized and running extremely smoothly.  There were over 30 players last year and it looks like there will be 40 players this year, ranging from grizzled tournament veterans to relatively new hobbyists.  Rob takes special interest to ensure that everyone attending has a great time.  The event takes place at North Bay Games and Hobbies in you guessed it, North Bay.  I will be teaming up with the store owner Terry again this year, as we finished second last year.  We plan on doing even better this time.  Fat Gaz and Craig Bodycote will also be making the journey to join in on the madness.  If you live in the North Bay area this event is definitely worth attending, and if you are not, it is well worth the drive.  There is still time to sign up just give Rob Steele a shout at steeler556@yahoo.com if you are interested.

Until next time I hope to see you out there.

Paint or Die II: Paint Harder

It’s that time of year again, time for the second annual Paint or Die painting competition.  This year the event is even  bigger than ever before, with more competitors and an even bigger penalty!  For those of you unfamiliar with Paint or Die, it is an online painting competition where competitors have a set length of time to complete their chosen army.  This year everyone will be painting Warhammer 40,000 armies and the participants have 100 days starting on August 23rd to finish their intrepid forces.   Every competitor that fails to complete their army must purchase, for every participant that finishes, a new Baneblade model!  With over 25 Games Workshop staff from across the country already signed up to compete, the penalty has already soared into the 1000’s of dollars.  This year you can follow our progress online and  see the armies being built in your local stores. Additionally, this year we are welcoming you to compete along with us.  How can you do this? It is quite simple, there are competitors in many of the Games Workshop Hobby Centres (but not West Edmonton because they are all cowards) across Canada, simply drop by one of them and join in on the madness.  If you are unable to make it to your local Games Workshop Hobby Centre simply contact us at ca.paintordie@games-workshop.ca

The Paint or Die painting competition will conclude on December 1st with a 1700 point Warhammer 40,000 tournament happening in every battle bunker across the country. Even if you are not part of the competition, you can come on down to your local bunker on December 1st and fight in the tournament. Or you can drop by to see who has succeeded and more importantly who has failed.

One of the many ways that Games Workshop is supporting these events is by providing posters and flyers, these will be distributed within Hobby Centres and participating independent retailers, or you can check out our website.   If you have any questions about these events or are interested in running something yourself, feel free to contact me at hall.heroes@games-workshop.ca

The Hall Of Heroes has been exploding with responses since the news about the Conflicts was released.  There has been a lot of feedback, regarding hobbyists disappointment with the changes, but there has been an absolutely huge amount of support coming in.  Clubs, Grey Knights and Trade Accounts from across the country have been stepping forward to fill the void of the Conflicts.  I knew the community was going to step up with the removal of the Conflicts, but I have been absolutely floored with the response.  Not only are communities planning on running more tournaments, many of them have an interest in running painting competitions, Mad Grox style events and much more.  I am more confident than ever that not only will the Conflicts not be missed, but this will be the most exciting year in the Hall Of Heroes yet.  It even looks like areas of the country that had a small presence in the Hall Of Heroes will be running additional events.   You will be hearing a lot of news in these upcoming weeks and months as new events start to appear across the country and we start to showcase some of the stellar events being run across the country.

In other Hall Of Heroes news the season is doing great, it has only been three months and there have been tons of results posted.  Currently in the lead is James Brunskill wreaking havoc with his Iron Warriors.  James is one of our intrepid staffers from the London GW who has been spending his weekends crushing the opposition at the independently run tournaments.  Following closely in second is George Symon with his wonderfully painted Imperial Guard.  West Bertozzi is in third overall and is also currently in the lead for Fantasy with his Bretonnians.  The competition is off to a great start so do not get left behind. It is time to get out there and join in on the existing events and jump onboard of the new ones showing up.  Until next time, I hope to see you out there.

Hopefully you have taken a moment to read about the fate of the Conflict Season for this year.  First of all, I want to reassure you all about a few things.  First is that the Grand Tournament will still exist as the defining two day tournament for Canada, you will still qualify for this event by being top 25 or from winning select tournaments.  The second is that I am still around, my focus has always been on ensuring you our tournament going hobbyist can get everything they want out of the hobby.  My role will continue to do exactly this, although now I will be able to increase support of the independent tournaments.  Finally the Hall Of Heroes system is here to stay, we have one of the greatest tournament circuits in the world and as long as you, the tournament going public continue to want these events they will continue to be run.

Now what of the removal of the Conflict Tournaments, well although this move may seem like a negative one and may initially upset the local community, I guarantee a lot of good will come out of this move and I personally am very excited about what the future will hold.  The news of the change to the Conflicts has already got a huge response from the community and with your help the Conflicts will not be missed.  We will be taking everything that makes a Conflict Tournament great and lending that support to premiere events in each region.  Some of these will be existing tournaments with a large following, some of them are new events that strong voices in the community are coming forward to initiate.  My role is to support these events in any way they need, from helping to establish a venue, providing scenery or even helping to run the event.
The first question was what makes Conflict so popular?  Is it the Coverage in the White Dwarf and the Canadian Website, the additional Hall Of Heroes points, the invitation to the Grand Tournament or is it the shining happy faces of both myself and Fat Gaz.   The good news is we can provide this support to some of the stellar tournaments that already exist, and help create and support new events.  Every region will be having a premiere event, and these events can receive this additional support.  Keep your eyes on this page as their will be a lot happening over the course of the season and the Community and Games Workshop work together toward the future and another exciting season.

Feel free to contact me via email at hall.heroes@games–workshop.ca if you have any questions, concerns or wish to be a part of these new events.

The dust has settled on Games Day and a few technical difficulties with the Hall Of Heroes Database have been sorted out and the results are now online.  As you can see there have been plenty of results sent in, but I know there are many more still outstanding.  If you do not see a tournament you have played in or organized on the recorded events list, please send in the results to the hall.heroes@games-workshop.ca email address or fax it to 905 829 9008 marked Attention Hall Of Heroes.

The Grand Tournament was completed just a few weeks ago and coverage for this spectacular event is online as well.  The Grand Tournament was the culmination of the entire event season as the greatest players from across Canada gathered to battle it out to determine the ultimate champion for both Warhammer and Warhammer 40 000.  The Grand Tournament was 5 games over 2 days finishing on Games Day.  At the end of the day the two Champions emerged, Jason Saunders and Frank Delanghe.  Jason Saunders won the Best Overall crown with his Crimson Fists through a combination of fantastic generalship, painting and sportsmanship. He edged out the competition to become the Warhammer 40,000 Champion for 2006-2007.  On the other side, Frank Delanghe is now the two-time Warhammer Champion. Winning the Grand Tournament for the second consecutive year.  Frank Delanghe once again rode his Lizardmen army to victory. This year going undefeated against some of the greatest generals in Canada.

The 07-08 season is off to a fantastic start with plenty of events being run spanning all three systems.  More than ever before there is a more varied listing of events.  There are Late Night Gaming, doubles tournaments for both Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 and many more starting to be run across the country.  We will also be running another Campaign Weekend in the Oakville Battle Bunker on July 14th and 15th, this time delving into Warhammer 40,000 as we are fighting out the First War Of Armageddon.  Full details for this event will be coming shortly.

Organizers wishing to run any of the above different style of events please contact me at hall.heroes@games-workshop.ca and I will gladly supply you with all the rules you will need.

Until next time I hope to see you out there.

Already into the middle of April and the season is off to a great start. In terms of Grand Tournament news the second round of GT invitations are now going out, this list is much shorter as the vast majority of invitees have eagerly accepted the challenge. This second list of invitees will have until Monday April 23rd to respond to Direct Services to secure your place.

We are over a month into the new season and one of your questions has to be, when are the results for the new season going live? The answer is simple, very shortly. We wanted to leave the results up until after the second round of GT invitations go out so that everyone will know who will be receiving the next invitations. As the invitations are now going out we are free to put up this seasons results.

In terms of the Hall Of Heroes, Canada’s first campaign weekend Knights End at Montfort is kicking off on April 21st and 22nd. The campaign weekend is an alternative to the regular tournament scene and gives a great mix of competitive gaming with off balance scenarios and story driven madness. These events have been run in the UK for years and we thought it was time we got in on the fun. There is a link below to the UK website so you can get a better idea of what these campaign weekends are all about.

For all the details on the Knights End at Montfort check out the Community Section of the Canadian Website or call the GW Battle Bunker at 905 829 3295. Until next time I hope to see you out there.

Things in the Hall Of Heroes are getting very busy. I have spent the last few weeks ramping up for Games Day and the Grand Tournament in May. If you have not heard about either of the two biggest Games Workshop events in Canada please follow this link for details.

Campaign Weekend: Knight’s End at Montfort

I have also spent my time working on Games Workshop Canada’s first ever campaign weekend. The Campaign Weekend is a 6-game Hall Of Heroes event, taking place at the Oakville Battle Bunker on April 21 and 22. Knight’s End at Montfort presents you with a combination of challenging games and story driven madness. Throughout the weekend players will be fighting for the fate of Montfort and control of Axe Bite Pass; the link between the Empire and Bretonnia. The weekend will be full of prizes, surprises, challenging scenarios and much more as the players fight to determine the outcome of the story. For full details check this link.

White Dwarf Day Edmonton

The final event on the agenda is White Dwarf Day Edmonton. The illustrious Hukish and I will head out to the wilds of Edmonton for the weekend of March 31. Like all White Dwarf Days we will be spending Saturday battling it out with the local community in a tournament at Kingsway Garden Mall and Sunday meeting with the rest of the general pubic. We will be showing off the sneak peek models, answering questions about upcoming events in Games Workshop and much more. If you are in the Edmonton area give the Kingsway Garden store a call at (780) 474 7166 for all of the details.

All these activities will be keeping me quite busy. With these events and a whole new season of Hall of Heroes events available I imagine you are all going to be quite busy as well. As always, until next time I hope to see you out there.
