March 22nd, 2006
Hello again, with the end of the 2005-2006 Hall Of
Heroes season things have been a little crazy around
here. The new season is off to a great start with several
tournaments being run all around the country. The 2006-2007
Hall Of Heroes results will be posted shortly and the
new rules for the season should appear any time now
(there have been some unforeseen difficulties, but
they will be online soon.) At the end of February I
had the pleasure of attending a Hall Of Heroes tournament
hosted by Phoenix Games in Kitchener and run by one
of our illustrious Grey Knights Tom Moskalik. Tom’s
tournament was absolutely fantastic and is the kind
of tournament I hope all Hall Of Heroes events are.
Instead of speaking about the tournament myself, I
have received some input from one of our avid tournament
goers Debora Buckwald-Sobestianowich. Below are the
things she had to say about this great event.

Yeah! Time for another Hall of Heroes Tournament
in Kitchener. I always look forward to tournaments
in Kitchener. Phoenix Games always attracts
a great group of players. This event managed
to get three people from Winnipeg, Manitoba
and one from Calgary, Alberta. Talk about having
your reputation getting around. Phoenix has
a large, diverse supply of Warhammer and Warhammer
40,000 products, AND a bitz bin. Who can go
wrong? Between games I love to walk over and
buy a new character, regiment box or maybe
even pick up some shields from the bitz bin.
The tables do not disappoint either. They
are carpeted so your models do not get chipped
if they fall over. We all know how that can
happen, and once one model goes, the rest manage
to tumble like a dominoes display. In addition
to the professional scenery, you have a shelf
underneath the table to put your spare models
or casualties on. The room is bright and spacious,
so you are not hitting the competitor behind
you.
Phoenix games has snacks provided for breakfast;
either fresh fruit, muffins or cookies. Phoenix
games also provides a Pizza lunch, giving you
time to admire all of the armies. This tournament
had excellent painted armies and hats off to
the judges on picking the top six because I
could not have done it.
 |
 |
Tom, the organizer of the tournament, manages
to come up with some fabulous objectives with
each of the Tournaments he runs. Each time
I have gone they have been different. Where
the guy comes up with these ideas, I could
not tell you, but keep up the good work. This
time instead of having scenarios of breakthrough,
conquer or king of the hill, Tom decided to
have only pitched battles but with the added
twist of primary and secondary objectives.
The first games primary objective was a fun
twist, forcing you to write a quiz on your
opponent’s army (brilliant!) Each game
had different primary objectives, but the same
secondary objective for all the games. The
secondary objectives were race specific. My
secondary objective, with Dwarfs, was to nominate
an enemy character and kill that character
by the end of the game. Killing a character
was often difficult, even with the new Dwarf
rules. But I had a great time and a lot of
laughs. That is what it is all about; how much
fun we have. Phoenix Games and the players
there know how to have fun.
 |
 |
This tournament was incredible, I had a solid
loss, a minor victory, a minor loss, I got
massacred and I massacred somebody. I will
tell you the players I went against did not
give me the wins easily, nor did I give them
any easy wins. On more than one game, by the
sixth turn, we were down to the last warrior
standing. It was up to the dice and it could
have gone either way. My first game against
Alex came down to exactly that(What a battle,
definitely one for the book of grudges) I knew
that this day was going to be full of fun,
intense battles and the two days did not disappoint.
Kitchener always manages to attract people
who are brilliant generals and great sportsmen.
I definitely look forward to the next tournament
and in the mean time I will be preparing Tror
Stormskull (my dwarf lord) for her next battle. |

The hard fought 05-06 Hall of Heroes season is over
and the results are in. The Grand tournament invitations will
be mailed out today to the top 25 people in both Warhammer
Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000. Those that have qualified will
find their name in the list below. To anyone who is on this
list and does not receive their invitation in the next few
days call Direct
Services at 1 888 498 7655 to register for the Grand Tournament
on May 27th at Games
Day.
A big congratulation goes out to all who qualified this year to play
in the ultimate contest to determine the Warhammer 40 000 and Warhammer
Fantasy champions for 2005-2006. It is with great pleasure that I announce
your 2005-2006 Hall of Heroes Champion Ryan Dychkawych.
Ryan managed an outstanding 348 points overall and played in an astonishing
78 tournament games. That is basically two tournaments a month for every
month throughout the season, talk about dedication. Ryan truly deserves
to be recognized as champion. Ryan will be recognized at Games Day on
May 27th; he will receive a free trip to Games Day including an invitation
to the Grand Tournament and will receive an army of his choice up to
a $400 value.
This year’s Grand Tournament will once again see the highest ranked
players from the Hall of Heroes, the Conflict winners from across the
country and the Hall of Heroes Champion. I can't wait to see you all
there.

Now that the season is over it is time to talk about
one of the major changes to the Hall of Heroes system, which
is the inclusion of The Lord of the Rings. The Lord of the
Rings tournaments will now award Hall of Heroes points in
a similar fashion to Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000
tournaments. This is a fantastic time to put together a The
Lord of the Rings force for the upcoming season. Games Workshop
bunkers will be running Lord of the Rings tournaments, just
as they run Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 tournaments.
The tournament games will range from an introductory level
of 200 points upwards to full forces of 500 points depending
on the party running the tournament.
The tournament system that we are running for The Lord of the Rings includes
the option of bringing a second force of the opposite alignment. This
rule will allow players to stay with the theme of The Lord of the Rings
and have good forces facing off against evil forces, instead of having
games where two forces of the same alignment battle.
 |
 |
The Lord of the Rings will also be featured as part of the Conflict Tournaments,
but much like the first year for a new sport this will be in an exhibition
or trial role. What this means is that the The Lord of the Rings tournaments
will be a two day tournament, although the tournament will be less
expensive then the other Conflict Tournaments. The winner will not
receive a trip to Games Day and the games will not be played on the
Conflict scenery. Any players participating will score the additional
Hall of Heroes points that accompany a tournament of the importance
of a Conflict and will still receive the recognition from being a Conflict
Tournament winner.
The addition of The Lord of the Rings in the Hall of Heroes system will
open up a new world of tournament gaming, with more gaming opportunities
for established Lord of the Rings players and a new game for our established
tournament players to master.

Hi, it is Cory Burns again giving you a quick run down
of the tournament circuit. With just a few weeks left it is
time to speak of the exciting things on the horizon for next
season. The Hall of Heroes system as a whole will be changing
to help promote all aspects of the tournament and the hobby
in general. In terms of the Hall of Heroes points system, points
will no longer be awarded for winning games. There will be
points awarded for games played and for any trophies won. We
will now also award the same number of Hall of Heroes points
regardless of the size of games played, allowing more variety
in our tournaments.
On to more exciting news, this upcoming season we will
be recognizing regional winners as well as national winners.
The awards will be as follows.
1. This year the player with the most Hall of Heroes points in their
province will be awarded a ticket to their local Conflict Tournament
($100 value), and maybe even more importantly, will be recognized
as your regions champion for the year.
2. On a national level we will also be awarding a battleforce/ battalion
and an army book/ codex to the player with the most points in each
of the gaming system in all of Canada.
3. The player with the most Hall Of Heroes points in all of Canada
will be declared the overall winner will still receive a trip to
the Grand Tournament in Toronto and a free army of their choice up
to a $400 value.
There are many more changes in next year’s system, so keep
your eye on the Games Workshop website for any updates. |
A quick look at this season’s results coming into the final stretch
puts Ryan Dychawych in first place with 312 points, close behind him
are Will Paul with 294 points and Alex Petcherkine with 286 points. Rounding
out the top five are Andrew Weber and Paul Jessop. Martin Gibeault is
leading the fantasy race with 236 points in Warhammer Fantasy alone.
Martin also has the highest win percentage of all our leaders, winning
nearly 80% of his games. Chris Orr, last year’s champion is still
out there ranked a very respectable fourth in terms of Warhammer 40 000
points and eleventh overall.
These next few weeks are going to be very interesting as there are only
two weekends worth of tournaments before the end of the season and the
race is quite close. I am eagerly waiting to see the list of those that
qualify for the Grand Tournament at Games Day, if you wish to be one
of them get out there and play in one of the last tournaments of the
year. That’s all for now and I will speak to you again in a few
weeks.

Hi there, Cory Burns again, the man in charge of the Hall
of Heroes system giving you a quick look at this year’s
Hall Of Heroes season and a few pointers on how you can help
to make it better.
As I write this Alex Petcherkine has just taken first place in the Hall
Of Heroes league with an astounding total of 274 points. Ryan Dychawych
is only two points behind Alex with a massive score of 272 points. Between
just these two guys they have played 124 tournament games; no wonder
they’re in first and second place. Will Paul, Andrew Weber, Steve
Tuinstra and Paul Jessop are all within striking distance of being the
overall Hall Of Heroes champion, each of them having well over 200 points.
It looks like the competition for the overall winner of the Hall Of Heroes
league will not be decided until the last week of the season.
I have been extremely interested lately to see where the players from
various provinces lie in the overall Hall of Heroes league and to see
just how national our national league is. Quebec’s Martin Gibeault
is in third place in Warhammer Fantasy with an outstanding 188 points.
Hailing from Saskatchewan Paul Jessop is 6th overall with 228 points,
of all the players in the top 10 he has the highest win record having
won nearly 80% of the games he plays. Paul Ting of Alberta is in 6th
place for Warhammer Fantasy with 154 points in only 19 games, by simply
being a great player with several beautiful armies. Nova Scotia has two
players in the top 15of Warhammer Fantasy, Michael Munday and Colin Keillar.
British Columbia has two Jason’s in the top 20 of Warhammer 40K
with Jason Saunders and Jason Dyer. Manitoba’s Todd Meilleur is
just outside the top 25 for Warhammer Fantasy, but with a few more points
will easily qualify for the Grand Tournament. It was great to see that
most provinces have been represented in the upper echelons of the Hall
Of Heroes league displaying the great quality of gamers we have throughout
the country.

Paul Ting' High Elves |
The best part of the Hall Of Heroes league is the large number
of tournaments being run and games being played. With the next
season fast approaching, I thought it would be great to speak
about how to get additional tournaments in your area. As you
will have noticed, how well a player places in the Hall Of
Heroes is directly related to the amount of tournaments they
attend. The first way to increase the amount of tournaments
in your area is to ask your local retailer, Grey Knight or
club if they are willing to run more tournaments. The Hall
Of Heroes tournament pack is only $150 and it comes with everything
you need to run a tournament including advertising on our website
and White Dwarf Supplement. The low cost and ease of running
a tournament makes it a profitable endeavor for any store or
club as long as they receive a reasonable turnout. There is
a complete list of clubs (we refer to them as Regiments of
Renown) on the Games Workshop website so you can look up any
in your area and contact them.
Another great way to increase the number of tournaments is simply to
run one. All you need is to gather a few like minded gamers and form
a club. Then simply visit the Regiment of Renown section of our website
and send in the information required. Once you have registered as club
you are eligible to buy the Hall of Heroes packs and run your own tournaments.
It could not be easier.

My name is Cory Burns and I am the event coordinator for
Games Workshop Canada and am also in charge of the Hall of
Heroes system. With this year’s Conflicts coming to a
close it is good time to reflect upon this current year’s
Hall Of Heroes season and take a quick look at what is to come.
This year there have been more tournaments than ever before with more
participants in all of them. If you have checked the league standing
you will see that the season is off to fantastic start. With the 05-06
season half over the top players have already gathered more points then
anyone managed to gather all of last season.
The player with the most points from this year’s Hall Of Heroes
season will be given a free 2000pt Warhammer or 1700pt Warhammer 40,000
army, a trip to the Grand Tournament in Toronto and most importantly
crowned as the Hall Of Heroes Champion for all of Canada. The competition
for Hall Of Heroes Champion has become increasingly fierce, with the
first place slot changing hands each week. At the moment Ryan Dychkawych
is leading with an outstanding 232 points playing his awesome pre heresy
Thousand Sons, with Paul Jessop following closely behind with a monstrous
score of 228 points destroying armies left and right under the feet of
his Chaos army. Steve Tuinstra is in third with 220 points with Will
Paul, Andrew Weber and Alex Petcherkine all managing to break the 200
point mark.
 |
 |
Andrew Weber's Rhinox |
Ryan Dychkawych's Thousand Sons |
Going for first place is obviously not the only goal, as the top 25 players
in Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40K will be invited to join the
winners of each Conflict Tournament in the invitation only Grand Tournament
at this seasons Games Day on May 27th 2006 in Toronto. This event will
pit the greatest players of all Canada in one final competition to
determine the true greatest player in both Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer
40 000.
The most important news of all is that the Hall Of Heroes season will
end on March 1st, 2006 and the only way to be in the top 25 is to play
in as many tournaments as possible. Right now the top 25 of Warhammer
40 000 and Warhammer Fantasy represent a fantastic cross section of the
country with almost every province represented, allowing the Hall Of
Heroes system to truly determine the best players of all of Canada.
On a personal note with the end of the Conflict Season I will have a
chance to play in some Hall Of Heroes tournaments. Myself, Fat Gaz and
Big Jay (The Conflict Tournament guys) will be spending the rest of the
season playing in whatever tournaments we can, because first and foremost
we are all gamers and love being out their playing games. So I hope to
see you out playing games and keep your eye on this column to hear more
about the season, upcoming events and information on the Tournament circuit.
