| Land Raider Mangonel
Why did I do it? Well, first of
all, I love tanks. Second, I needed a long range vehicle
that had huge fire
power and was built for sieges to fit into the fluff
of my space marine army, the Storm Fists. The answer
was the Mangonel, also nicknamed the ‘Oliphant’.
To construct the Land Raider Mangonel
you will need a basilisk kit, a heavy bolter (the one
from the
space
marine attack bike would do, I used the one from the
Landspeeder) and some plasticard.
First, assemble the complete basilisk
cannon and platform, leaving the shield off for now.
Once the cannon is built
set it and the shield aside. You will not need the
basilisk hull.
Second, remove the front door area
of the Land Raider by cutting the lip edges from the
insides of the Land
Raider hull. I did this with a modeling chisel. Be
very careful not to damage the surrounding plastic
too much.
Once the hull is flat, put the land raider aside.
Third, cut the Basilisk cannon’s
base to fit upon the hull of the Land Raider. It is
a fairly tight fit,
and takes a bit of maneuvering. Make sure that the
cannon sits far enough forward so the shield will fit
and not
rub against the roof area.
Fourth, cut the shield to fit between
the hull sides of the Land Raider.
Fifth, fill in gaps and open spaces
with plasticard. My version has no transport capability,
so I filled
in the front door areas. The rear doors fold down and
open
to show the interior detail.
Using the VDR rules, my vehicle
weighs in at 250 points, with standard 14 Land Raider
armour.
I am hoping to build a mark II
that will have a solid front section with just the
cannon visible. I also
plan to light the interior of the second one. I’ll
have to see how it goes.
Thanks, and enjoy.
