CHAMPIONS OF ULTRAMAR - PATRICK NG

When you travel to a Grand Tournament, you can always be sure that you will be treated to some of the best painted armies around. Patrick Ng brought a stunning Ultramarines army with him to Vancouver, and he was even kind enough to sit through an interrogation..erm interview about said Ultramarines.

GW: Patrick, how about telling us a little about how you got hooked on the Games Workshop Hobby?

PN: Well I started playing when I was just a wee lad. I was just a normal kid, playing normal games, you know, Red Rover, Red Rover and Square Ball—that was the extent of my gaming experience. But then one day I stumbled into a local hobby shop. All I remember is hearing, “Psst, hey kid. Come over here. Wanna see a cool game?” It was Space Hulk. And that was the end of it.

GW: Your army has a nice clean paint scheme. Can you walk us through the steps you go through when painting a model?

PN: Well, what I did was hire these little fairies that I had to pay in pixie dust. But I worked them too hard so they went on strike. And I wound up painting the army myself. For both troops and vehicles, I start off with a black undercoat, then a throw on a base coat, then a throw on a dark wash that’s nearly close to black. Then I go in and paint the base coat again, careful not to go into the areas that are suppose to be shaded. Then for troops I hand paint highlights. And for vehicles, I drybrush the highlights. That’s pretty much what I do. Exciting, eh?

GW: Is there any one particular model you are proud of? How much work did you put into it?

PN: The model I really like is my leader, Chaplain Cassius. He’s based on a picture in an earlier Ultramarines Codex. Even after the Codex was obsolete with Third Edition, that picture was still burned in my head. So I dug up the picture and threw together a conversion. Cassius contains bitz from all four Chaplains. I was inspired by “Monster Garage.”

GW: How did you go about choosing your troops for this army? Did you want to produce a balanced force or did you have a theme in mind?

PN: Balance is good. I tried to get an army that had some dudes that would have a good chance against a lot of armies. From Tau to ‘Nids.

GW:What devious tactics have you concocted for this army?

PN: Hmm, what kind of tactics? I just put together this list so I’m still experimenting a bit. Against shooty armies, I try to rush in and assault first. While for assaulty armies, I try to stay out of harm's way, and shoot them up as much as I can. Against Sisters, I run up to them and ask them to dance.

GW: And how has the army worked for you so far at the Vancouver GT?

PN: Let’s just say I’m having a good time.

GW: Now that this army is finished, what will you be working on next?

PN: I’m working on getting some sleep.

GW: Well said, that about wraps it up. Anything you want to add before running off?

PN: Take one look at my army, and it would seem pretty obvious what my favorite color is. Well, the thing is, I hate blue. And it's not just because I've been painting it for hours and hours. Blue is the color of evil--the color of the L.A. Dodgers. I can't remember a time when I didn't hate blue, well, because I grew up rooting for a real baseball team. Of course, I'm talking about the Giants, baby!
