Certain
armies will always catch your eye. Armies that contain
600-plus models tend to tear your eyes out of your face
and force you to admire them. It is entirely possible
that Dave Muzia is mad, well mad enough to build
the largest Night Goblin army this interviewer
has ever seen. I sat down with Dave to chat about his
army.
GW: Lets start by finding out a little about
you and your experience with the Games Workshop Hobby.
DM: I've been playing about 8 years. I was in
college and stumbled on a game store. I have been hooked
on Fantasy ever since.
GW:
You have quite the army here. I have never seen so many
Night Goblins. How long did it take you to paint all
of these Gobbos?
DM: I started in October 2001, I have been working
on them ever since - in total, about 15 months.
GW: You must have a strategy in mind with an army
like this; can you take us through your general game-plan?
DM: Fanatics up the middle to hit his strongest
stuff. Big units on the flanks to secure them and clean
up small units. The biggest thing, never put yourself
in a POSITION TO HAVE TO TAKE A PANIC CHECK! I flee
from a lot of charges, but I also get the countercharge.
Terror kicks my butt. Cant do anything
about that though, they are Goblins, right? They are
not exactly heroic.
GW: What is the most bizarre thing that has happened
to this army so far?
DM: Seven fanatics two games so far.
Four wounds total.
GW:
What response do you get from your opponents when they
see your army? Has anyone ever fallen asleep waiting
for you to move ALL those goblins?
DM: No, my phase is very quick. Animosity, move,
done, I dont have any magic or shooting. It actually
takes my opponents longer for their turns. I can actually
see people get psyched out when I put the army on the
table. A lot of games have been decided before the models
are even on the board. Some opponents forget their battle
plan and miss a lot of opportunities. The army itself
is very fragile. If you break a unit, most of them will
run.
GW: Goblins are not known for their strong leadership
qualities. How do you keep the army in line?
DM: Flee from any combat you think you might
lose. After one bad round of combat, I can have 200
Goblins fleeing. It is much better to flee with a single
unit then lose the whole front. Magic and shooting against
my big units (units of 54) is pretty ineffective, so
usually no Panic there. Terror is a problem.
One monster can take my whole army off the board on
a bad day. But hey, they are Goblins; they shouldnt
be brave. You take the disadvantages along with
the advantages when you field an army. I could always
get lucky with the Fanatics.
GW: Now that you have mastered Night Goblins, what
is next for you?
DM: Either a complete Tzeentch Horror army
or an Empire Witch Hunter army. I havent decided
yet.
GW: I think that wraps it all up. Anything you want
to add Dave?
DM: Warhammer to me is about troops, troops,
and more troops! When you have 16 units on the board,
there is little you cant do!
