Patric
Grimwood has constructed a solid Empire army
to compete in the Vancouver GT. His stylized "Sons
of Solland" army made quite an impression on
this interviewer. Here is a excerpt from the colour
text Patric composed for his army...
"The Sons of Solland shall sally forth laying
claim to the lands East of the River Urskoy, South of
the great city of Kislev, and North of the World's Edge
Mountains. These lands shall be claimed in the name
of his holiness the Emperor. This new domain shall be
named Solland and an Elector Count seated to rule bearing
the Sword of Solland."
GW: Hello Patric, can you tell us a little about
you and your experience with the Games Workshop Hobby?
PG: I am a native of Seattle and I work in
high tech. I have been playing GW games for a little
over a year. I have a complete Space Marine army as
well as my Empire.
GW:
What army have you brought with you to the Vancouver
GT?
PG: WFB Empire. The Sons of Solland Knights
accompanied by Old Reliable, the Steam Tank
GW: Your army consists mostly of mounted troops.
Do you have any advice for other cavalry commanders
out there?
PG: Concentrate your forces and break the enemy
line. Panic is your friend. The center charge
or the weighted flank work well for me. Make use of
your superior armour, but remember that you will probably
be outnumbered. Always be prepared to make a strategic
retreat.
GW:
You have taken the time to build a scenic army base.
Can you take us through the assembly/painting process?
PG: The base is plywood on slope cut boards,
so there is a slight down slope from back to front.
On top is another sheet of plywood, with holes cut for
the movement trays to sit in. First the board was painted
black. Then gravel, trees, and some large rocks to represent
boulders were applied and painted. Last the board was
painted with watered down Elmer's glue, and flock liberally
sprinkled over it. I used a couple of different colours
of flock to represent the road and different shades
in the grass areas.
GW: How long did it take you to paint your army?
What techniques do you use to paint your models?
PG: I started building in the first week of
October and finished painting 2 days before the GT,
so it took 3.5 months start to finish.
GW: Which armies give you the most trouble?
PG:
Undead and horde armies are the bane of my army. The
Fear-causing units in an Undead army make breaking
in combat likely, and the horde can envelope my 53 models
fairly easily. Having no magic at all in the army means
magic can be huge against it.
GW: Has the Vancouver GT been kind to you? How
is the army performing so far?
PG: The army is doing OK. My dice decided to
leave the building for one game, and the lack of magic
defense cost me a second game. Overall, this has been
a great weekend!
GW: I think that wraps it all up. Anything you
want to add Patric?
PG: I really appreciate your interest in my
army and the fact that GW is taking the time to represent
the gamers at the Vancouver GT so well. What a great
event!
